International tax advisor in Switzerland: what to look for (and what it costs)

Zero Tax · Updated July 2026 · 8 min read

A founder sold his business, negotiated a lump-sum arrangement in a Swiss canton and assumed the story was over. It was not. His home country still treated him as resident for two more years, his holding company sat in a jurisdiction that triggered questions, and nobody had modelled the exit tax he walked straight into. The forfait fiscal is one of the most elegant regimes in Europe. It also solves only one of the problems a wealthy arrival actually has.

What the lump-sum regime does, in plain terms

Switzerland's lump-sum taxation, known as the forfait fiscal, breaks the normal link between income and tax. Instead of taxing your worldwide income, the authorities tax you on your living expenses. The taxable base is the higher of your actual worldwide living costs or seven times your annual rent or rental value (three times boarding costs if you live in a hotel). You then pay ordinary federal, cantonal and communal tax on that base.

For federal tax there is a floor: the minimum taxable base for 2026 is CHF 434,700, and tax cannot be computed on anything lower regardless of your rent. Each canton adds its own minimum, typically between CHF 400,000 and CHF 600,000 or higher. EU and EFTA citizens generally benefit from a reduced federal minimum of around CHF 400,000. Not every canton offers the regime, which is why where you land is a decision, not a detail.

Who actually qualifies

RequirementDetail
NationalityForeign nationals only. Swiss citizens cannot use the regime.
First residenceYou must be taking up Swiss tax residence for the first time, or after an absence of at least ten years.
No local workYou cannot carry out gainful employment in Switzerland. Managing your own foreign wealth is fine; working a Swiss job is not.
Canton choiceThe regime and its minimum base vary by canton. Some cantons have abolished it at cantonal level.
The detail almost nobody weighs: the forfait settles what you owe Switzerland, but it does nothing about the country you are leaving. Exit taxes, trailing residency rules and treaty tie-breakers all live on the other side of the border, and they are decided by timing that happens before you move, not after. A clean Swiss entry on top of a messy exit is not a plan, it is an invoice waiting to arrive.

Why a low-tax country still needs an international advisor

People assume that a favourable regime removes the need for advice. It usually does the opposite, because it concentrates all the remaining risk in three places the regime never touches:

Switzerland fixes the local rate. An international advisor fixes the map: which assets to reorganise before arrival, how to time your exit, which treaty article decides a dispute, and in what order to execute so no authority can recharacterise the move.

What a good advisor does before you sign a Swiss lease

1. Model the exit, not just the entry

Quantifies the departure tax and trailing-residency exposure in the country you are leaving, and finds the window that minimises it.

2. Reorganise assets with timing

Decides what to sell, revalue or restructure before you become Swiss resident, so gains that predate the move are handled deliberately.

3. Choose the canton on the full picture

Balances the cantonal minimum base, the negotiated arrangement and lifestyle, not just the headline number.

4. Keep the structure defensible

Maintains substance, reporting and documentation so the arrangement survives scrutiny on both sides of the border.

What it costs, and the gap we fill

Large firms serve corporates and their fees start in the tens of thousands. Boutique expat advisories charge from $15,000 USD for a relocation plan. Between the two sits the successful individual who wants a clear, defensible plan without a corporate budget. That is exactly who we serve: a $449 USD strategy consultation with a written signed opinion you keep, and implementation quoted by project only if you decide to execute with us.

Frequently asked questions

How does Swiss lump-sum taxation work?

Instead of taxing your worldwide income, Switzerland taxes you on your annual living expenses. The taxable base is the higher of your actual worldwide living costs or seven times your annual rent or rental value (three times boarding costs for hotel residents). For federal tax there is a minimum taxable base of CHF 434,700 for 2026, and each canton sets its own minimum, typically between CHF 400,000 and CHF 600,000 or more.

Who can use the lump-sum regime in Switzerland?

It is available to foreign nationals taking up Swiss residence for the first time (or after a ten-year absence) who do not carry out gainful employment in Switzerland. Swiss citizens do not qualify. EU and EFTA citizens generally face a reduced federal minimum base of around CHF 400,000. Not every canton offers the regime, so the choice of canton matters.

If the regime already caps my tax, why hire an international advisor?

Because the forfait only settles your Swiss position. Your real exposure is usually the country you left (exit taxes, trailing residency, treaty tie-breakers), the jurisdictions where your entities and investments sit, and your US status if you hold citizenship or a green card. Switzerland fixes the local rate; the advisor fixes the map and the sequence.

How much does an international tax advisor cost for Switzerland?

Big 4 engagements typically start in the five figures and boutique expat advisories commonly charge from $15,000 USD for a relocation plan. Zero Tax charges $449 USD for a strategy consultation with a written signed opinion, with implementation quoted separately.
